What are my air passenger rights in the event of a delayed or cancelled Wizz Air flight?
In the European Union, the rights of air passengers are protected by the European Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, commonly known as EU261. In the UK, a post-Brexit British adaptation of the EU261, ‘The Air Passenger Rights and Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019’, protects air passengers departing from the UK or flying with a UK-based flight carrier.
What do these regulations say about your air passengers' rights with delayed or cancelled Wizz Air flights? ?
- Was your Wizz Air flight delayed by at least 3 hours? If the airline is at fault, you can claim up to €600 as both the British and EU laws state, in Wizz Air flight compensation.
- Was your Wizz Air flight cancelled? If you decided not to use any alternative flight offered by the airline, you can claim a full monetary refund. Plus, if the cancellation was announced fewer than 14 days prior to departure, you might be also entitled to compensation.
- Regardless of the reason or type of flight disruption, Wizz Air is required to provide you with special assistance known as the "right to care." This assistance encompasses provisions such as food and beverage vouchers, communication services, and accommodations and transportation if necessary. You can request these provisions directly at Wizz Air’s service desk at the airport. If Wizz Air refuses to provide you with a voucher, you can obtain the necessary items and cover the expenses yourself. In such cases, Wizz Air must reimburse you for reasonable expenses incurred.
Important Note: If your Wizz Air flight was delayed or cancelled due to "extraordinary circumstances," you might not qualify for flight compensation. In order for Wizz Air to provide flight compensation, they must be accountable for the flight disruption.

I had a Wizz Air flight to a non-EU country. Can I still claim compensation and refund?
Yes, you can! Below are two circumstances under which you can get claim compensation:
- You are travelling with an airline headquartered in the UK or the EU
- You are not travelling with an airline headquartered in the UK or the EU but the flight took off from the UK or the EU
The only exemption would be some of the Wizz Air Abu Dhabi flights. As this specific subsidiary of Wizz Air is based in a non-EU country, the EU regulations don’t apply to it. However, if your Wizz Air Abu Dhabi itinerary includes an EU country (the airline flies to countries like Greece and Cyprus), you can claim Wizz Air compensation and refund for a flight from Europe to Abu Dhabi. As shown in the table below, this does not apply to flights from Abu Dhabi to Europe.
Type of flight | Example | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Flying with a British carrier | Tokyo to London with British Airways | Yes |
Flying with a EU carrier | Amsterdam to London with KLM | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK | London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK | Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines | No |
How much compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled Wizz Air flight?
The amount of your flight compensation depends on the distance of your flight — the longer the distance, the higher the compensation amount.
Distance of your flight | Compensation according to UK261/EU261 |
---|---|
Flights shorter than 1,500 km | €250 per passenger |
Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km | €400 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres within the EU | €400 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU | €600 per passenger |

Extraordinary Circumstances – Can Wizz Air deny my claim?
According to the European air passenger rights regulations, there are certain situations in which the airline can rightfully deny your claim. We call these extraordinary circumstances.
- Severe weather conditions (eg. thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms).
- A strike caused by workers in the aviation industry not related to the airline (eg. baggage handlers).
However, keep in mind that a Wizz Air strike caused by workers within the airline (eg. pilots, flight attendants) are NOT considered an extraordinary circumstances and you can claim compensation! - Natural disasters (eg. wild fire, floods, and hurricanes)
- A delay or cancellation caused by an ill or unruly passenger
However, you should be aware that airlines often use extraordinary circumstances as an excuse to deny rightful claims, especially when passengers submit claims individually, without the help of a legal representative.
If you want to maximise your chances of a successful claim, we recommend you claim with Flight-Delayed.com. We will efficiently process your claim, prepare all the necessary documentation, send it to the right people at the airline, and — if necessary — fight for your rights in court.

Passengers can always choose the most favourable law.

About Wizz Air
Wizz Air is a low-cost airline operating across Europe and a few destinations in the Middle East and North Africa. Despite being the largest Hungarian airline, it is not the country’s flag carrier.
Currently, Wizz Air has a fleet of approximately 120 aircraft, flying more than 710 routes between over 40 countries. The airline’s subsidiaries include Wizz Air UK and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi — as the latter does not operate under the European jurisdictions (Wizz Air Abu Dhabi flies mostly between Abu Dhabi and non-EU destinations, such as Egypt and Ukraine), most of its flights are not covered by the flight compensation and refund regulations we describe below.
According to the data provided by Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in April 2023, Wizz Air performed the worst in punctuality in the UK, with an average delay of 46 minutes and six seconds.
