What is an ETA, and Who Needs It?

Starting in 2025, the UK is introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for many travelers. Whether you're planning a short visit, passing through the UK on your way to another destination, or staying longer, it’s essential to know whether you’ll need an ETA.

What is an ETA, and Who Needs It?

An ETA is a pre-travel authorization required for visitors to the UK who don’t need a visa for short stays and who don’t already hold UK immigration status. The rollout is as follows:

• Non-Europeans: Required to have an ETA starting January 8, 2025.
• Europeans: Required to have an ETA starting April 2, 2025, with applications opening on March 5, 2025.

This includes travelers who are only transiting through the UK, as all non-British and non-Irish citizens will need permission to travel in advance.

Does this apply to transit passengers?

Yes. Even if you’re just transferring flights in the UK and not entering the country, you’ll likely need an ETA unless you already hold UK immigration status or are a British or Irish citizen.

How to apply for an ETA

Eligible travelers can apply using the UK ETA app (App Store, Google Play) or through GOV.UK if they don’t have access to a smartphone. The process is designed to be quick, with most decisions made within 3 days.
