How much compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled LA flight?
Given that LA is not a part of Europe, you can only be eligible for LA delayed or cancelled flight compensation if your flight originated in Europe and/or was with a European airline. Flight compensation is only granted if your flight was delayed by more than three hours upon arrival or if the cancellation of your LA flight was announced fewer than 14 days before departure. It should be noted that the airline must also bear responsibility for the flight disruption.
Therefore, if your LA flight arrived over 3 hours late or was cancelled less than 14 days before you were supposed to leave, you could claim flight compensation! The amount of flight compensation is based on the distance of your flight.
Distance of your flight | Compensation |
---|---|
Flights shorter than 1,500 km | Get £220 per passenger |
Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU | Get €600 per passenger |
It is important to note that if your flight is delayed or cancelled, the airline is required to provide you specific financial assistance. This includes food and beverage rebates, communication, transportation, and, if necessary, overnight accommodations. You can redeem your vouchers at the airline's service counter at the airport. If the airline does not supply you with vouchers, you may purchase what you require and preserve the receipts; the airline must refund you.
Flight compensation for a delayed flight from/to LA — check if you're eligible now!
You might be eligible for flight compensation under European Union regulations if your LA flight was delayed. Be careful; as LA is outside of Europe, you can only receive up to €600 in flight compensation for flights departing from European airports and/or operated by European airlines.
Moreover, LA delayed flight compensation depends on:
The length of the delay: your LA flight arrived at the destination more than 3 hours later than expected
The responsibility of the airline: the airline was responsible for the delay. (The airline is not required to compensate passengers for delays due to unforeseeable circumstances or to a third party; for more information, see this page's section on "Extraordinary Circumstances")
The amount of compensation varies according to flying distance: the longer your flight, the higher the compensation will be.

If your LA flight was cancelled, you could receive up to €600 in flight compensation per passenger if:
Your LA flight was cancelled less than 14 days before the departure date and time, AND
The airline was at fault for the cancellation (for additional details on when the airline can legitimately deny compensation to passengers, see the "Extraordinary Circumstances" section of this page).
Cancellation notice | Alternative flight | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Fewer than 7 days in advance | Departs 1h+ earlier or arrived 2h+ later | Yes |
7-14 days in advance | Departs 2h+ earlier or arrived 4h+ later | Yes |
Fewer than 14 days in advance | No alternative flight offered | Yes + refund |
Unfortunately, you cannot file a claim for compensation for a cancelled Montreal flight if the reason for the cancellation was an industrial conflict like a strike or riot. These are examples of “extraordinary circumstances”.
Ask for the refund of your flight from LA
You will get a complete ticket refund if your LA flight is cancelled. Compared to compensation, this is different. When a flight is cancelled and the airline is at fault and obligated to compensate the passengers, it will offer them LA flight compensation. All customers, however, are qualified for a refund as long as they ultimately chose not to fly with the airline. Your flight ticket can be fully refunded if your flight to LA was cancelled and:
The airline did not provide you with an alternative flight, OR
The airline offered you another flight but you chose not to accept it.

Claim nowWere you offered a voucher for your cancelled flight from LA? Here’s what you should do.
In some cases, airlines can offer you a travel voucher instead of a cash refund. Here's why we don't suggest accepting those:
You will be required to make a new booking with the same airline moving forward. Moreover, the airline would probably impose a timeframe by which you must redeem the voucher.
You could have trouble getting your money back if the airline ever goes bankrupt.
Flight delayed or cancelled to LA, am I also entitled to flight compensation?
Yes, but only under certain conditions. LA is a destination outside of Europe, therefore, European regulations (EU261) only apply to flights departing from the UK/EU and/or operated by European airlines.
If you were flying from LA with a non-EU airline, you won’t be able to claim flight compensation according to European regulations. More information on this can be found in the table below.
Type of flight | Example | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Flying with a British carrier | Tokyo to London with British Airways | Yes |
Flying with a EU carrier | Amsterdam to London with KLM | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK | London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK | Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines | No |

Claim compensation nowExtraordinary circumstances disrupted my LA flight - can the airline really deny my compensation claim?
Even though your flight was cancelled or delayed by more than 3 hours, the airline could justifiably deny providing compensation. These circumstances — which we refer to as extraordinary circumstances — are mentioned when a third party or unforeseen event, rather than the airline, is to blame for the delay or cancellation.
Here are a few instances of extraordinary circumstances:
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
