How much compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled Mexico flight?
Since Mexico is not in Europe, you can only be eligible for Mexico delayed or cancelled flight compensation if your flight originated in Europe and/or landed at a European airport. Flight compensation is only available if your flight was delayed by more than 3 hours upon arrival or if the cancellation of your Mexico flight was announced fewer than 14 days before departure. It should be noted that the airline is additionally required to be responsible for the cause of the flight disruption.
Thus, if your flight to Mexico was delayed by three hours or more, or cancelled less than 14 days before departure, you may be entitled to flight compensation. The amount of flight compensation is calculated per passenger and is determined by the distance of your flight.
Distance of your flight | Compensation |
---|---|
Flights shorter than 1,500 km | Get £220 per passenger |
Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU | Get €600 per passenger |
It's critical to remember that if your flight is delayed or cancelled, the airline has a duty to provide you with additional assistance. This includes the cost of eating and drinking, communications, travelling, and, if necessary, spending the night at a hotel. Your vouchers can be redeemed at the airline's service desk in the airport. If the airline does not supply you with vouchers, you can purchase what you require and save the receipts; in that case, they must issue you a refund.
Flight compensation for a delayed flight from/to Mexico — check if you're eligible now!
If your Mexico flight was delayed, you could be entitled to flight compensation under the EU regulations. Be careful, as Mexico is not part of Europe, you can only claim flight compensation for flights leaving from a European airport and/or operated by a European airline. If your flight from Europe to Mexico from Europe was delayed, regardless of which airline you were flying with, you may be entitled to up to €600 in flight compensation per passenger.
Moreover, Mexico delayed flight compensation depends on:
The length of the delay: your Mexico flight arrived more than 3 hours later than expected
The responsibility of the airline: the airline was responsible for the delay. (The airline is not required to compensate passengers for delays caused by "Extraordinary Circumstances," more information is below on this page.)
The compensation amount is dependent on the flight distance: the longer your flight, the more compensation you receive.

Claim flight compensation for your cancelled flight from Mexico
If your flight to Mexico was cancelled, you may be eligible for up to €600 in flight compensation per passenger if the following conditions were met:
Your Mexico flight was cancelled less than 14 days before the departure
AND
The airline was at fault for the cancellation (for additional details on when airlines can deny compensation to passengers, see the "Extraordinary Circumstances" section of this page).
Your ticket will be fully refunded in the event that your Mexico flight is cancelled. Compared to compensation, this is different. In the case that a flight is cancelled and the airline is at fault, the airline will offer Mexico flight compensation to the customers. All customers, however, are qualified for a refund as long as they ultimately chose not to fly with the airline.
You can get the full refund of your ticket if your flight to Mexico was cancelled and:
- The airline did not provide you with an alternative flight.
OR
- The airline offered you another flight but you chose not to accept it.

Claim compensationWere you offered a voucher for your cancelled flight from Mexico? Here’s what you should do.
Airlines can offer travel vouchers instead of cash refunds when a flight is delayed. Here's why we strongly advise against taking them:
With the travel voucher, you will have to make a new booking with the same airline. Moreover, the airline can impose a timeframe by which you must redeem the voucher.
If the airline goes bankrupt, you may have difficulty getting your money back.
Flight delayed or cancelled to Mexico, am I also entitled to flight compensation?
Yes, under certain circumstances. Because Mexico is not a member of the European Union, European regulations (EU261) only apply to flights departing from the EU and/or operated by European airlines.
Additionally, British post-Brexit air passenger rights regulations apply to flights from the UK and those handled by British airlines.
You cannot claim flight compensation if you flew from Mexico on a non-EU airline, according to European regulations. The table below contains additional information.
Type of flight | Example | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Flying with a British carrier | Tokyo to London with British Airways | Yes |
Flying with a EU carrier | Amsterdam to London with KLM | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK | London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK | Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines | No |

Check my flightThe airline might refuse to compensate you even if your flight was cancelled or delayed for more than three hours. Extraordinary circumstances are used to deny flight compensation to passengers when a third party or unforeseen event, rather than the airline, is to blame for the delay or cancellation.
Here are a few examples of extraordinary circumstances:
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
The country from which you are flying determines this timeframe.
In the United Kingdom, for example, you can claim flight compensation for up to 6 years after your flight, which is one of Europe's longest time frames. Scotland is an exception in the UK, with a 5-year time limit for filing a claim.
Passengers who submit a claim with Flight-Delayed.com generally receive their compensation or refund within a few weeks or months, depending on the airline's responsiveness.
