How much compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled Tokyo flight?
Since Tokyo is not in Europe, you can only be eligible for Tokyo flight compensation for delays or cancellations if your flight originated in Europe and/or was operated by a European airline. Only flights that were delayed by more than 3 hours upon arrival or flights that were cancelled fewer than 14 days prior to departure are eligible for compensation for delayed or cancelled flights. Keep in mind that the airline must also be considered responsible for the disrupted flight.
If your Tokyo flight was delayed by three hours or more, or cancelled less than 14 days before departure, you may be eligible for flight compensation. The amount of flight compensation is determined by the length of your flight and is calculated per passenger.
Distance of your flight | Compensation |
---|---|
Flights shorter than 1,500 km | Get £220 per passenger |
Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU | Get €600 per passenger |
Keep in mind that the airline owes you more assistance if your flight is delayed or cancelled. This covers meal and beverage vouchers, communications, necessary travel, and accommodation. The airline's service desk in the airport is where these vouchers may be redeemed. You can buy what you seriously need and keep the receipts if the airline does not provide you with vouchers; the airline will be responsible for paying you back.
Flight compensation for a delayed flight from/to Tokyo — check if you're eligible now!
If your flight from Europe to Tokyo was delayed, regardless of which airline you were flying with, you may be entitled to flight compensation of up to €600 per passenger.
If your Tokyo flight was delayed, you could be entitled to flight compensation under the EU regulations. Be careful, as Tokyo is not part of Europe, you can only claim flight compensation for flights leaving from a European airport and/or operated by a European airline.
To receive Tokyo delayed flight compensation, you must meet the following requirements:
- The length of the delay: your Tokyo flight arrived more than 3 hours later than expected
- The responsibility of the airline: you can only claim Tokyo flight compensation if the airline was responsible for the delay. (The airline is not required to compensate passengers for delays caused by "extraordinary circumstances," more information on this can be found further down the page.)
The length of your flight determines the compensation amount; the longer your flight, the larger the compensation payment.
Cancelled flight from Tokyo — Compensation and refund policies
If your Tokyo flight was cancelled, you may be eligible for flight compensation of up to €600 per passenger, a ticket refund, or both in some cases. Continue reading for more information on when you might be eligible for any of these!
Claim flight compensation for your cancelled flight from Tokyo
If your Tokyo flight was cancelled, you could receive up to €600 in flight compensation per passenger. Your situation must, however, meet the following criteria:
1. Your Tokyo flight was cancelled less than 14 days before the departure,
AND
2. The airline was at fault for the cancellation (for additional details on when airlines can deny compensation to passengers, see the "Extraordinary Circumstances" section of this page).
Cancellation notice | Alternative flight | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Fewer than 7 days in advance | Departs 1h+ earlier or arrived 2h+ later | Yes |
7-14 days in advance | Departs 2h+ earlier or arrived 4h+ later | Yes |
Fewer than 14 days in advance | No alternative flight offered | Yes + refund |
You won't be able to get compensated for your cancelled Tokyo flight if it was cancelled due to a strike at the airport or any other type of industrial action. These actions are classified as “extraordinary circumstances”.
Ask for the refund of your flight from Tokyo
You can also receive a full refund if your Tokyo flight is cancelled. This differs from compensation. When a flight is cancelled and the airline is at fault and must compensate the passengers, it will provide them with compensation for their Tokyo flights. However, travellers are eligible for a refund if they ultimately choose not to take a flight with the airline. You can get a full refund of your ticket if your flight to Tokyo was cancelled and:
1. The airline did not provide you with an alternative flight.
OR
2. The airline offered you another flight, but you chose not to accept it.

Claim nowWere you offered a voucher for your cancelled flight from Tokyo? Here’s what you should do.
Airlines can offer travel vouchers instead of cash refunds when a flight is delayed. Here's why we strongly advise against taking them:
1. With the travel voucher, you will have to make a new booking with the same airline. Moreover, the airline can impose a timeframe by which you must redeem the voucher.
2. If the airline goes bankrupt, you may have difficulty getting your money back.
Flight delayed or cancelled to Tokyo, am I also entitled to flight compensation?
Yes, under certain conditions. Because Tokyo is not in Europe, European regulations (EU261) only apply to flights from the EU and/or operated by European airlines.
According to European regulations, you cannot claim flight compensation if you flew from Tokyo on a non-EU airline. More information can be found in the table below.
Type of flight | Example | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Flying with a British carrier | Tokyo to London with British Airways | Yes |
Flying with a EU carrier | Amsterdam to London with KLM | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK | London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK | Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines | No |

Claim compensationExtraordinary circumstances disrupted my Tokyo flight — can the airline really deny my compensation claim?
Even if your flight was cancelled or delayed for more than three hours, the airline may refuse to compensate you. These circumstances, known as extraordinary circumstances, are used to deny passengers flight compensation when a third party or unforeseen event, rather than the airline, is to blame for the delay or cancellation.
Here are a few examples of extraordinary circumstances:
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
Take it easy; you won't need to explain the specifics of why your Tokyo flight was delayed or cancelled. Our experts will do the groundwork by examining internal and external aviation data to ensure that you get your Tokyo flight compensation.
