Lufthansa pilot strike costs millions
Friday, September 12, 2014
Around 140 flights to and from Munich were cancelled last Wednesday (10/09/2014) due to a pilot strike by Lufthansa. The German flagship airline reported millions in losses.
This is the third strike within a two-week period, leaving around fifteen thousand passengers stranded. Reason behind the pilot strike is the opposition towards the proposal to raise the retirement age from 55 to 60 years. CEO Carsten Spohr announced Tuesday evening that Lufthansa will bring forth a new offer in due time.
Extra Boeing 747
Lufthansa is practicing damage control by rebooking passengers and offering alternatives by train. An additional Boeing 747 was deployed for the route Frankfurt – Munich. Lufthansa director Thomas Klühr called the actions of the pilots ‘’extremely disturbing’’. Whether or not more strikes will be announced is unclear.
