easyJet cancels flights from London to Moscow

British low-cost carrier easyJet has announced the termination of its London-Moscow service effective March 2016. This decision follows a decline in demand for travel between the two destinations, as well as an overall weakened Russian economy.

The fall of the Ruble has made airline tickets, priced in foreign currencies, more expensive compared to tickets offered by competing Russian airlines. Easyjet was therefore forced to slash the number of flights from and to Moscow by half in the previous months.

This is not the only airline to be affected by the sharp decline of Russian tourists. According to the European Travel Commission, the number of Russian travellers in Europe plummeted by a third within the first quarter of 2015. Long-haul carriers such as Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific and Etihad were all forced to cut back on flights to Russia in the previous months.
