New flight routes from Glasgow to Paradise

Thursday, April 21, 2016

Both Thomson and First choice have announced plans this week, to ramp up their summer schedules. The highlight: A new direct route from Glasgow to Jamaica, which will be launching for the first time. Total flight time is said to be around 9 hours. This new route is part of the overall plan to connect Scottish holidaymakers with more appealing destinations.

However, it seems like a long wait, as flights to Jamaica are to be rolled out with the summer 2017 schedule. For all those already excited, we take a look at the Caribbean island as a taste of what awaits.

Getting there

Current flights leaving Glasgow for Kingston involve at least two stopovers in London and New York, with a total journey time of nearly 20 hours. The best time to go is during the shoulder season: April - May. The weather is pleasant and dry, not to mention the reduced rates for accommodation. Avoid September - November as these are the rainy months with the occasional risk of a hurricane.

Visas: UK passport holders do not require a visa for stays of up to six months.

Getting around

Public transport is the best and cheapest way of discovering the island. The extensive network of buses will connect you with all the major attractions and spots. For those who would like a bit more independence, there are several international and local car rental companies available. However, domestic companies tend to offer better daily rates. In order to drive in Jamaica, one requires an international driver’s license. If you're travelling during peak season, best to reserve in advance.

Where to stay

Like with many sunshine destinations, Jamaica is no stranger to all-inclusive secluded resorts. These mostly come in a fight & hotel package deal and offer a one stop shop to relaxation. The downside is however, that many resorts are quite closed off. If you're looking for more flexibility, rental apartments offer the comfort of an own home with holiday feeling. For those on a budget, guesthouses are a more accommodating option.

Things to do

Go snorkeling: Especially the North coast of the island is known for its abundance of sea life.

Climb Dunn's river falls: Located near Ochos Rios, this waterfall is one of the country's most popular attractions. The stair shaped waterfall makes for an exciting climb, opening up to breathtaking cascades and turquoise pools.

Visit the Bob Marley museum: The home of the legendary Jamaican artist is a must see when in Kingston. Experience the place where he lived and recorded until his death in 1981. An hour long tour will walk you through his fascinating life story.

Discover Kingston: While in town, take the opportunity to explore the country's capital. As the cultural hub, Kingston is home to many historical buildings, such as Devon House. Built by George Stiebel, the 11-acre property boasts an elaborate Georgian-style building, surrounded by lush lawns. Kingston offers an array of restaurants and cafes. Do not miss out on local Jamaican cuisine.

Meet the people

What better way of getting to know a place than talking to the locals? "Meet the people" is a program launched in 1968 with the sole purpose of connecting tourists with the people of Jamaica. Visitors get the unique opportunity to meet with a Meet the people ambassador who shares common interests. This helps break the ice. Spend the day together, stay for dinner - there is hardly a better way to get to know the people. Travelling to Jamaica soon? Sign up now!
