Industrial actions at Spanish airports in the next few weeks, including Easter

Monday, April 15, 2019

Travellers who have planned a trip to Spain during the Easter holidays beware: in the run-up to Easter and during the Easter weekend there are threats of strikes at all Spanish airports. The 'Semana Santa' is traditionally a busy week for air traffic in Spain. Many families visit each other during the week before Easter to celebrate the traditions of the 'Holy Week' together.

Spanish ground crew will stop working all around the country

The Spanish trade unions USO (Unión Sindical Obrera) and UGT (Unión General de Trabajadores) have called on 60,000 ground staff at Spanish airports to not be present at their jobs between 21 and 24 April. They are on strike for better pay and better working conditions. This could potentially affect the flights of 5 million passengers.

Strikes at Air Nostrum

Pilot trade union SEPLA announced that industrial action has been taken in regards to Spanish airline Air Nostrum. The pilots went on strike as a protest against the outsourcing of their operations (more than 100 flights) to other companies within the same group. These strikes will take place on 15, 15, 17, 22, 23 and 24 April and would disrupt the flights of more than 10,000 passengers.

Renfe and some other train operators will also be affected by the industrial action

Security officers working for Renfe (one of Spain’s most important train operators) will join the nation-wide strike next Thursday, April 18. The actions taken will consist of two-hour partial stoppages of service and it will hit Madrid the hardest. UGT has said that the reason for the industrial action is the fact that the company has failed to pay two bonuses to its security staff.

Brussels Airlines hit by Air Nostrum strike

Brussels Airlines cooperates with Air Nostrum and is therefore also experiencing the consequences of the strike actions. On the first day of the announced strikes, they have cancelled eight flights. "There are about a dozen flights a day with Air Nostrum, depending on the day," said the spokeswoman Kim Daenen. Brussels Airlines has informed passengers and found a solution for the most part.
