Dozens of Aer Lingus flights cancelled due to IT failure — claim compensation
Monday, September 12, 2022
Due to an IT problem, all Aer Lingus flights from Dublin bound for the UK and Europe after 14:00 local time on Saturday, September 10, were cancelled. Passengers affected by the disruption are eligible for flight compensation.
Aer Lingus IT failure — what happened?
The cloud-based system in charge of the airline's check-in and boarding operations had been seriously jeopardized, the airline stated in a tweet on Saturday, September 10, at 19:00 local time. This was due to a significant connectivity issue with a network service provider. Both the airline's website and mobile app were inaccessible.
As a result of the morning flights' cumulative delays, there were large queues and crowds at Dublin Terminal 2. Customers reportedly had to wait outside the terminal while check-in procedures were attempted manually.
Although most of the impacted flights were scheduled to depart from Dublin, the IT failure also affected Aer Lingus flights departing from Belfast, Shannon, and Cork.
Ryanair benefits from Aer Lingus mishap
Aer Lingus' IT malfunction has already been taken advantage of by rival Ryanair, located in Dublin. The budget airline announced that it was providing rescue flights for Aer Lingus passengers who were stranded in Dublin, Cork, and Shannon. At the Ryanair kiosks at the three airports, passengers were able to purchase a special alternative flight ticket for €100.
Get compensation for your cancelled Aer Lingus flight
Was your Aer Lingus flight cancelled due to the IT failure? Then you are likely eligible for both full monetary refund of your ticket as well compensation of up to £520 / €600!
The British and European air passenger rights regulations are clear — if a flight is cancelled less than 14 days before the scheduled departure because of the airline, passengers are entitled to up to £520 in compensation.
Moreover, if the airline does not offer an alternative flight to the passenger, or if the passenger does not accept the alternative flight that was provided, a ticket refund must also be issued.
Don’t accept Aer Lingus travel vouchers!
It's very likely that the airline might try to offer you a travel voucher as a substitute for compensation/refund (or less compensation than what you are entitled to) — don't settle for this! If the Aer Lingus IT breakdown was the cause for your flight delay or cancellation, you are entitled to the compensation based on the following criteria:
For flights shorter than 1,500 km, the compensation is £220.
For flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, the compensation is £350.
For flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU, the compensation is also £350.
For flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU, the compensation is £520 —but if your flight was delayed by fewer than 4 hours, the total amount might be reduced by 50%.
