Your rights in the event of a delayed or cancelled Volotea flight

Wherever you are flying with Volotea, your air passenger rights are protected under the EU regulation 261/2006, often referred to as the EU261 or the Flight Compensation Regulation. If your flight was cancelled or delayed due to an "extraordinary circumstance," you are not capable of receiving flight compensation. Customers are only eligible for compensation if the airline is the only party at fault for the delay or cancellation of the flight.

When can I claim compensation for a delayed Volotea flight?

When can I claim both a refund and compensation for my cancelled Volotea flight?

You can do so if your flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days prior to the original departure date and if you decided not to take any alternative flight offered by the airline. Can I get flight compensation if I cancel my Volotea flight?

Should I accept a travel voucher from Volotea instead of a refund?

1. If you accept a travel voucher, your money is frozen. You have to fly again with the same airline and the voucher expiry date is usually quite short.

2. A voucher does not protect your money in the event of the airline’s bankruptcy — you simply lose your money.

The amount of compensation that is possible to receive will change depending on the distance of your flight.

Extraordinary circumstances — can Volotea deny me compensation?

The so-called extraordinary circumstances are situations in which the flight gets cancelled or delayed not because of the airline but because of a third party or force majeure. The most common extraordinary circumstances are:

• Bad weather, for example thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.

• A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry.

  HOWEVER! A strike of a specific airline/its crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!

• Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.

• Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.

• A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.

• An ill or unruly passenger.

• Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
